BKB Breakfast
Business leaders gather to hear the latest Backing Kent Business initiatives and for key organisations to sign an Agreement to Action and work together to support the Kent economy. View TranscriptRepresentatives from the business community meet over bacon butties and coffee to hear the latest developments for Backing Kent Business, a new initiative to support enterprise in the county.
KEVIN LYNES, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, KCC: 'We've brought together a group under the Backing Kent Business overall sort of campaign specifically to work together and make it easier to come up with that route to assistance for businesses. The most important aspects about this is that because we're all around the table, because we're now in constant proper open true two-way dialogue, none of us are replicating. So if we were going to have some sort of a database about contact numbers and Business Link Kent or the Federation of Small Businesses also had it we now know about it and can have that really open relationship that says well actually why would we put resource into that if something already exists, we might as well stream our data into that. Equally some of the stuff we've just agreed here that we're going to try and get some of the banks into a kind of a summit almost to find out what the real state of bank lending is to businesses across the county. They're all quite happy to attend a meeting that we host, so it's that a real true two way dialogue and hopefully a more efficient way of making the most of resources we have between the partners.'
Not only was the breakfast an opportunity for the organizations to sign the Agreement to Action, but also for Kent County Council to unveil their 20 year vision for the county's business, education and transport infrastructure.
Cllr PAUL CARTER (Con), Leader, Kent County Council: 'What are the consequences of these fundamental changes and what do we need to do now with what I refer to as a little Victorian vision in making sure that we're ahead of the game and not caught out by having not planned for these fundamental changes in a fast changing world and a fast changing county.'
Already the Backing Kent Business scheme has found new fodder to digest with the government's Working Capital Scheme guaranteeing 50% of short term business loans.
KEVIN LYNES, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, KCC: 'It's just critical to get under the skin and find out what the detail is and the benefit of having something like the Backing Kent Business group is already at this meeting, we've discussed that new legislation and had a couple of the partners say, SEEDA and so on, we'll take that away, unpick it and bring it up in an understandable format that we can put up on the website and businesses can understand, because the promise is great but actually open the cover and see whether the true delivery is what Lord Mandelson is promising.'
It certainly seems that the major players in the county are doing all they can to Back Kent Business.
