Kent Investment Club Launch
It's an exciting week for business in Kent as the Finance SouthEast launch it's new initiative, the Kent Investment Club. View TranscriptThere was a big boost for businesses in the county this week with the launch of the Kent Investment Club. It aims to encourage investors to consider looking at small, exciting companies, as Sally Goodsell, Chief Executive of Finance South East explained to a large corporate gathering at the Maidstone Studios.
SALLY GOODSELL, CEO, Finance South East: 'Through the establishment of the Kent Investor Club we'll be giving opportunities to approximately 40 Kent-based businesses over the next two years to pitch their businesses to the Investor Club and hopefully obtain the equity financing they need from this local source.
'We're hoping that in the next 2 years alone an extra 2 million pounds will come into the economy through the investments in Kent, through private investors, so in five years who knows, perhaps we'll have had a world leader developed in businesses, but certainly a lot more businesses achieving investment.'
This is good news for companies like head the the cloud who are local meringue makers.
LYNN BOLTON, Founder, Head in the Clouds: 'Hopefully by 2015 we'll be a worldwide brand and we're here because we've done all we can as an individual and as a company starting out and we need investment. Lots of great feedback, a really good meeting and I was able to sit and listen to the presentation and I felt inspired and I felt like shouting out "hey I'm here, you'd be great, I'd love you to come and invest" so it's been wonderful, a very very useful day.'
The Investment club has widespread support throughout the business community in Kent.
IAN ODGERS, Member, Kent Economic Board: 'The great lack that we had in this part of the world were "angel investors"; people who could really get involved, get stuck into the companies who were prepared to put there time and their effort and their ideas and their excitement behind things and we did not have the people who were prepared to put up the money and get involved in the company and that was an essential part, it needed to be people who were local to the businesses that were trying to get of the ground.'
The Kent Investment Club is funded by KCC, who are keen to grow companies that can compete with the best in the world.
ROGER De FOUGEROLLES, Member, Kent Economic Board: 'I have been trying to establish a business angel network here, but it required money to do it which I was never able to attain. But now we have it and I'm very optimistic that Finance South East, Kent Economic Board and Kent County Council will succeed in the venture, so I think it's a good time for young entrepreneurs in Kent.'
Following its successful launch, the Investment Club will now provide a comprehensive training and development programme for investors focusing on the opportunities and challenges of investing in Kent.
