View Synopsis Featuring GEOFFREY FRANCIS, Director, Samaritans Tunbridge Wells

Well Christmas gets a lot of hype and people are more or less told to be happy and of course people aren't happy right throughout the year, so to be told, particularly at this time that it's a time for families, it's a time for joy, it's a time for giving it's a time for spending; a lot of people just aren't able to do that and so the pressure gets to them quite considerably and it builds up and spirals out of control.

Well first of all, most of our calls come on the phone. But you can also email us, text us and you can call in at our centre here at Lime Hill Road in Tunbridge Wells. But most of our contacts are by telephone and when you phone us, you will be answered by a trained Samaritan volunteer who will ask you what the problem is and will encourage you to talk about it.

"I'm sorry to hear that, would it help to talk to me about it?"

And the one thing we do do in the Samaritans is that we encourage people to talk about their emotions. It's not something we do a great deal in this country; we're not very good about talking about our feelings. Most people have friends or family to whom they can turn if they have a problem, but sometimes a problem can be too personal or seem too big to be able to discuss with friends or family and in that case talking to someone who is unconnected to the problem can sometimes be helpful and that's what Samaritans offers, a listening ear, without judging and with total confidence and without giving advice. So if you've found yourself in that situation where you just needed to talk to somebody and there was nobody else, then Samaritans is there for you 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
